Live updates, results from MLB All-Star slugfest

The 2021 Home Run Derby at Coors Field includes some of baseball’s most electrifying sluggers with Mets first baseman Pete Alonso back to defend the crown he’s held since the event last took place two years ago

All eyes will be on top-seeded Shohei Ohtani, who leads the majors with 33 home runs at the All-Star break. The Angels’ two-way star will get his chance to shine in the derby 24 hours before he takes the field as the AL’s starting pitcher and leadoff hitter in the Midsummer Classic.

Alonso, the 2019 winner, is the No. 5 seed and faces Royals catcher Salvador Perez in the first round. Stay tuned for live updates throughout the night as the home runs fly into the Denver sky:

    Home Run Derby first round

No. 6 Trey Mancini (Orioles) defeats No. 3 Matt Olson (Athletics)

    • Mancini  —  24 HR — longest 496 feet: Mancini caught fire after taking a break halfway through regular time and earned himself an additional minute. Quite a round for the cancer survivor.
    • Olson — 23 HR — longest 495 feet: Olson struggled out of the gate but didn’t waste swings and had the chance to tie Mancini at the buzzer but hooked it just foul down the right field line.

No. 1 Shohei Ohtani (Angels) vs.  No. 8 Juan Soto (Nationals)

No. 2 Joey Gallo (Rangers) vs. No. 7 Trevor Story (Rockies)

No. 4 Salvador Perez (Royals) vs. No. 5 Pete Alonso (Mets)
